A's Update 6-7-2007

Clarinda A’s spent most of the past week on the road and came away with a 5-1 record during that period. Overall the A’s are 16-7, with a 7-6 MINK League record.
     
Monday, June 12 the A’s defeated Chilllicothe in a league game at home.
    
Tuesday   they traveled to Beatrice to face the Bruins and were able to win that MINK League contest 7-4 as the pitching staff held them to only 4 hits. Jeff Phillips was the starter with Keith Spreckels, Sheldon Lechuga and David Goodenough coming on in relief. Adam Shupe and Furquan Shamsud-Din each had homeruns for the A’s and were 2 for 4 as was David Bachofner.
   
Wednesday the team was at home for a non-league game with DJ’s Dugout from Omaha. Behind the pitching of Sammy Miller, Spreckels and Kevin Dwyer, the A’s won 4-2.
   
Thursday was an open date as they prepared for a three day, four game league swing to Topeka and Ozark, MO.
    
In Topeka they were able to take the single game 3-1 with Brooks Kimmey having the hot bat going 3-4 on the night. With the game tied at 1 going into the 8th inning, the A’s were able to go ahead when Bachofner tripled and scored on a single by Kimmey. They added an insurance run in the 9th when Keith Hustedt singled, Brian Taylor walked and Jimmy Mittleberger singled Hustedt in. Pitching was handled by  Jason Gurka, Brad Williams and Wesley Griggs.
    
Todd Vogel pitched a 3 hit game and gave up only one run in the first of a double header Saturday against the Ozark Generals, but was the loser as the A’s were unable to get on the board and had only two hits.
    
In the second game Grant Campbell was able to hold the Generals scoreless on only 4 hits, striking out 6, as Clarinda put 3 runs up early. Hustedt doubled and scored on a Taylor single in the first inning and the A’s added two more in the fourth off singles by Mittleberger and Brandon Hayes who scored on a double by Brock Spangenberg.
    
Hitting was the name of the game in the final game in Ozark as the A’s scored 15 runs on 16 hits, while giving up 6 runs on 9 hits. Jeff Phillips, Chris Court and Griggs combined for the win. Hitting was led by Bachofner’s 4-4 day, Andrew Kainer who was 3-5 and Mittleberger, Shupe and Jimmy Swift who went 2-5.
    
Monday was an open day for the A’s this week and they traveled to Beatrice Tuesday for a MINK League game. They will host FCA/KC Grays this Wednesday and Thursday will see the Beatrice Bruins return on the Clarinda Chamber of Commerce free night. The A’s take to the road again on Friday when they travel to Topeka and then to Kearney, MO for an FCA/KC Grays game. Sunday they will back home for Schenck Enterprises “Friends of Scouting” free night. June 26 they will travel to Liberty, MO to meet FCA and the game vs Nebraska Sport, originally scheduled here Wednesday, June 27 will be played in Shenandoah to make up the Optimist’s game that was rained out there May 30.
