KMA Radio Coverage of 37th Clarinda A's Baseball Hall of Fame

A LEGEND HONORS A LEGEND The 37th annual Clarinda A's Baseball Hall of Fame Banquet may have been the first without the late Merl Eberly, the longtime manager and general manager of the team, but there may never be another one where he wasn't honored more than he was Saturday evening at the Clarinda Academy Activity Center.

Major League Baseball Hall-of-Famer, St. Louis Cardinal great, and former Clarinda A's player Ozzie Smith presented Merl's wife, Pat, and the rest of the Eberly family with a hall-of-fame like bust of Merl, which you can see in the picture.

Smith and former major-leaguer and Clarinda A's player Von Hayes were in attendance to welcome the newest five members of the A's hall-of-fame. They are Elaine Farwell, Craig Larscheid, Gordon Kokenge, Alan Mahaffey, and Bob Steinkamp.

The Iowan Article on the Clarinda Iowa A's

The Iowan article on Clarinda Iowa A's

Love of the Game

While kinship helps define a summer in Clarinda, the fans taking their seats in Eberly Field have come to see fast pitches, hard line drives, loaded bases.

“People who come get to see really good baseball,” says Ryan, now carrying on the family legacy. “You never know who will make it to the Big Leagues. You may be watching the next Hall of Famer.”

From the desk of Mrs. E

From the desk of Mrs. E.,
The last time I wrote was two and a half years ago when Merl had been hospitalized almost a month for another surgery after damage had been caused by his chemo/radiation therapy. We feel the time we had between that episode in his life till his death June 11th was bonus time.
For some reason, the good Lord saw fit to give him these extra years and months and they were important to us as a family and those of you who knew him well. For the family it gave Merl an opportunity to spend time with each of our children and grandchildren individually, especially these last two months. For others, it gave him time to let them know they mattered in his life. That is a luxury not many people have as their lives come to a close.
We are so grateful that we were able to keep him at home the entire time - our faith continued to grow and the importance of a close family and friends was even more evident than before.
To our baseball family and friends - you have been incredible in the support & love you have shown during his illness and passing - we are so humbled by the number of you who were able to be at visitation and the "celebration of life" service - and for those of you unable to attend, it was truly that, a celebration. Following the church service we went to the ball field for a cookout and fellowship - felt it was the fitting place for his life's "ninth inning" to end.
Thanks again for all the support & love sent our way - may God bless each of you.

Sad Day for the A's Program

Alumni, fans, and friends of the A’s program it is a sad day in Clarinda and for the Clarinda A’s family.  After a long and courageous battle with cancer our beloved General Manager Merl Eberly passed away at his home in Clarinda this morning.  Merl had an impact on so many lives as he assumed many roles with the Clarinda A’s throughout the years.  Whether you knew Merl as the General Manager, coach, teammate, friend or family member you knew Merl’s passion for the game of baseball and for life. Merl will be greatly missed by all of those that had the pleasure of knowing him and his presence will be missed at Clarinda Municipal Stadium/Eberly Field “Where family traditions begin.”

Visitation at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel Wednesday, June 15 from 6-8 pm.  Celebration of life service at St. John’s Lutheran Church Thursday, June 16th at 10:30 am.

MINK League play will open with Omaha Diamond Spirit on June 1. League action will involve a 42 game schedule and 10 non-league games. Thirty-one of those contests will be played at Clarinda Municipal Stadium-Eberly Field, with 21 games to be on the road. Season tickets are now available and remain a value at $25 for a family pass and $15 for a single. Admission at the gate is $2, with K-12 students free.
