(Clarinda) -- After winning the MINK League title last season, the Clarinda A's have had an up-and-down year, as they sit at 25-24 with just two games left in the season.
KMA Sports talked with A's Manager Ryan Eberly for Monday's Sports Feature, and he says it's been a rough year for Clarinda.
"It's just been a tough year," said Eberly. "We had some guys not come that we were counting on this year, so we're trying to plug some places on the field. It's been a rough year, the biggest problem we have had is fielding the ball this year, giving away extra outs."
Eberly says it's been the top half of the Clarinda lineup that has provided the most consistency this season. Leading the way is infielder Gavin Golsan, who is hitting .326 with four doubles, two triples and 17 stolen bases. Catcher Justin Smith is hitting .303 and is second on the team in doubles with nine.
One highlight of the A's this season has been the pitching staff. Clarinda boasts two pitchers that rank one and two in the MINK League in strikeouts. Jacob Howel is 4-1 with a 2.22 ERA and in 52 2/3 innings of work has struck out 49 and walked only 13. Winston Lavendier has also racked up strikeouts all season, fanning 48 in 46 2/3 innings of work. In total, Clarinda has 10 pitchers that have thrown at least nine innings this season with an ERA under 4.00.
The A's wrap up the 2014 campaign with two consecutive home dates, hosting St. Joe tonight before a home tilt with Chillicothe on Tuesday. Both games are slated for a 7:00 PM first pitch from Eberly Field at Municipal Stadium.
