(Clarinda) -- The Clarinda A's suffered two close losses at the hands of the Branson Nationals on Monday night.
The A's lost 2-1 and 3-2 to take a tough doubleheader sweep.
In the opener, all three runs were scored in the first inning. Clarinda, playing as the visitor, scored the first run when Dakota Woods followed Clayton Daniel's leadoff triple with an RBI single.
The Nationals responded, though, scoring their only two runs of the game off Collin Orellana. Orellana worked all six innings, giving up just the two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out three.
Woods had two of the four A's hits with Daniel and Steven Pico Jr. getting the other two.
In the nightcap, the A's lost in eight innings despite a late comeback.
Clarinda took an early 1-0 lead on a Chase Hamilton solo homerun in the fourth inning, and they carried that lead into the seventh when Branson struck for two runs.
The A's came back to tie it up in the bottom half when Colin Butkiewicz walked and advanced around the bases on a wild pitch, fly out and another wild pitch. Branson, though, came back with a run in the eighth that the A's couldn't answer.
Hamilton, Butkiewicz, Pico Jr. and Ben Duerr all had hits for the A's in the game. Samuel Reed threw six innings of one-hit shutout ball, striking out three, before Shane Lantigua gave up two runs in the seventh.
Justin Hoyt gave up two hits and a run in the eighth to take the loss.
